Where did all these line breaks come from?

"Frankenfish,"
"the killer
that walks," "a
monster." Yes... I'm talking about THE FISH - Crofton's "alien
invader," the Northern Snakehead.

In real life it's just another exotic pest. But in the terror obsessed
pseudoenvironment
of the American media it has become something out of a science fiction
movie. How about this for a lead:

Spawn
of Snakehead

"Beneath the murky water that bubbles and smells like a cauldron
of menace, where the blue dragonflies hover and the bottom tugs at unsuspecting
feet, the monster fish may be multiplying."

Everyone is enjoying the joke. All the references to "Icthyoterror,"
"the
X-Files" and the "Andromeda
strain" are tongue in cheek. To look at, the fish is nothing special
- no longer than your average house cat, its jaws are small and it lacks
the menacing rows of razor sharp teeth you'd expect from reading the newspaper
headlines.

To frogs and mice
the creature must look like Jaws but your average snakehead would have
trouble attacking a Chihuahua or kitten.  And even its enthusiastic
promoters at WBAL Baltimore are forced to admit that "the
killer fish is not dangerous to the public".

When snakehead
got loose in Florida last year it wasn't national news. As fisheries
official Eric
Schwaab says: "There is a whole laundry list of exotic species that
threaten native systems... The snakehead is just one of them." But these
particular snakehead got loose in the beltway during a break in the war
on terror.

The New York Times' columnist Maureen Dowd described the fish as "as
sneaky as the head snake Osama." Americans have got into the habit
of thinking about the world as if it were a Hollywood movie. Journalists
find it natural
to talk with horror film makers about Osama bin Laden. The Saudi millionaire
fits neatly into the role of horror movie monster or sci-fi alien invader.
Arab terrorists are imagined as inhuman creatures spawning in the suburbs
or laying eggs in their nests in Afghanistan, the West Bank and Iraq. Sometimes
I half expect Condoleezza
Rice to step up to the microphone and say:

"I
say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way
to be sure." (Oh... sorry about that. Are you at work now?)

Americans are in horror mode and the fish accidentally wandered on to the
set. Is it any wonder people are starting to talk about using explosives?

Bugger.
